We prepare what we are going to say and we make sure we have the facts right.
Maybe we dress well, to make a good impression, or we do something else.
But have you ever prepared your VIBE for the negotiations?
We know that up 97% of our communication is done through body language.
But did you know we also communicate with our VIBE.
It affects the people in our presence, but it also influences people on the other side of the world.
That vibe even comes through our typed messages, regardless of the words we have written!
Much of our body language is also triggered by our vibe.
Have you ever walked in a room and the vibe was hostile?
How did that affect you?
What normally happens when we step into a hostile environment? We feel threatened and our fight-flight or freeze reflex is activated. One of the consequences of this is that our non-essential, but higher, brain functioning switches off, so that the blood can go to the large muscle groups. Only our survival brain (reptilian brain) is still fully functioning, but it is very limited when it comes to negotiating. Its behaviour is action- reaction and defend my territory.
All the other preparation becomes futile, because if the vibe is hostile, then we have to negotiate with "reptiles", because the other party has gone into survival mode. How effective do you think this will be? Symptoms of people negotiating with their reptilian brain can range from stubbornness to becoming violent and uncontrollable.
It is time for BeingOtherWise. Let's use the new wisdom of preparing our vibe for the negotiations.
How can we do this?
- Make sure your brain is switched on and stays switched on during the negotiations.
- Be clear of our intentions for the negotiations.
- Release our feelings of hostility towards the other party.
- Create a fantastic vibe in the room.
No athlete will consider entering a competition without warming up first. They know that when they are warmed up they reduce the risk of injuries and they perform better.
Well can we afford to step into the arena of negotiation without warming up our brain? We will not pull a nerve if we don't, but we end up with emotional damage, because an un-integrated brain has the habit of misinterpreting things as a threat.
By doing the quick and easy Brain Gym exercises called PACE, before the meeting, we ensure that our is switched on before we step into the meeting. We can even do some of these exercises during the meeting. An important one is to make sure that people have enough water to drink, to keep our brain functioning optimally.
Here is the video in case you haven't seen it yet.
The traditional way of negotiations is often with the intention that it is all about winning or losing, we have created the atmosphere of competition. Competition and co-operation don't go together. When we step into the negotiations with the intentions of finding win-win solutions or no deal, our brains will stay integrated and our brains can give us creative solutions.
With the win-win atmosphere, people are more likely to build on each others suggestions, instead of breaking them down, in order to "score points"
When we want BeingOtherWise during the negotiations, it is important to release our hostility towards the other party. Our hostility will affect the vibe tremendously, no matter how hard we try to hide it. This hostility needs to be addressed if we want to prepare the vibe. I find the most effective way of doing this is Applying the Three Fingers Pointing Back. You can read about it in my blog, How to deal with idiots in power.
Just as we affect other people, our vibe also affects the room and what and who is in it.
For example, when we walk into a place of worship, there is often an amazing atmosphere. If we walk into a room where people were tortured we sense that vibe too.
There are many ways you can affect the vibe in the room. You could meditate in it. Bless it through prayer and more. I have found that when I play my Apphirmations softly in a room before and/or during a meeting, the atmosphere becomes amazing. Especially the Apphirmations "Creating a Balanced Mind-Body System" and also "Optimum workplace" work really well. You can read more about it on www.apphirmations.com/shop. You can click on the product's name to get more information. We also have some free ones that can work for you.
