Are you worried about Covid?
Do you have any other health problems that you are concerned about?
The third Covid wave is hitting South Africa hard.
What are you doing to stay healthy?
- Do you feel like va prisoner of your own home because you are too scared to go out?
- Are you popping many supplements?
- Do you sanitise and wash your hands all the time?
These are all great things to do. And now there also another self-healing solution that will activate our biggest ally in staying safe during the pandemic. The biggest ally for our health is our mind.
Psychoneuroimmunology
Psychoneuroimmunology is the science of how our mind affects our body and the immune system.
Below you will find one of the ways how our mind effects the immune system.
Dr Bruce Lipton explains how we have two defence systems –
- One responds to external threats with our fight, flight – freeze reflex.
- The second one is the internal defence system, which is our immune system.
The external defence system gets preference over the internal immune system. In the cavemen days, external threats were more acutely life threatening than an internal threat of e.g., a virus. After we dealt with the external threat, e.g. a sabre tooth tiger, we would go back to fighting a virus.
When the body is mobilised to fight external threats, blood draws away from the digestive system, our higher brain functions and immune system. It is distributed to the arms and legs, ready to fight or flight. This means that when we feel stressed, because we perceive an external threat, our immune system is shut down, temporarily.
Why do we feel threatened?
In our modern society, we have a lot less physically life-threatening situations compared to the caveman days. Yet it seems like we are a lot more stressed now than even 100 years ago.
What triggers our external alarm system?
We receive impulses from our environment and then we interpret them. We compare the new experiences with our previous memories, which are stored in the subconscious mind. If we subconsciously think that the current event is like a dangerous situation, our body triggers the alarm system. The external defence mechanism is activated, and our immune system (partly) shuts down.
We can even activate the external defence mechanism by just thinking about threatening situations. Our media bombards us with news of all the threats in the world.
This is just one example of how our immune system is affected by our (subconscious) thoughts.
